I'm rebuilding a early series 3 at present the rear number plate is on the drivers side I'm a bit confused as lots seem to have it on the near side
witch side should it be?

I've often wondered this, mines on the drivers side too but there are lots with it on the nearside.

Is it a build date thing or did land rover just put them on random sides for no reason?

Mine is an 82 series 3 plate on nearside ! Maybe it was random or did Land Rover have left and right handed badge fitters ?

It was moved to the left when the requirement for a rear fog was introduced, the fog lamp being fitted to the offside:cool::)

mines is a 75 and it was on the drivers side, but i swapped it so i had room to fit a reverse and a fog light, i didn't think to check if that was legal as i had seen others with it on the passenger side.

1980 onwards the plates were on the nearside. Pre 1980 and they were on the drivers side. Exception being exports as some of those were nearside even on early ones.

Mines 1972 and on the offside , fog light fitted above it which was within the height limit specified.
