Ello all,

Had a problem other day drivers side side lights where not working, I traced this down to a wire shorting out where the loom had chaffed through on the rear crossmember. I tapped it up replaced blown fuse and everything worked as it should!!

Now, the rear brake lights are on when I turn side lights on. So there is no brake lights as their already on acting as the side lights. I'm guessing there is more wires chaffed thorough around the loom by the rear crossmember that I missed??

Just checked the brake switch by joining it together and nothing so must be shorting out?
 
Yep will do, with the side lights off, there is still no brake lights? Must be chaffed or melted wires where it shorted out I didn't see?
 
Will try find and repair any dogey wires I find first as I'm guessing it will be an earth melted. If no luck will run new earth to the holders and see what it's doing. Thanks seadog :rolleyes:
 
Traced wires and haven't found anything chaffed or shorting out?
Next I will put a direct earth to both the rear bulb holders, should I do this by just wire to a 12 battery negative terminal?
 
No mate either the neg on your battery fitted to the car, or a nice clean earth on the body, which the negative of the battery is connected to, hence the term negative earth ;)
 
Yup I've got you now!! Will give each holder a earth to the tub I know it's not great as it's alley but will see if it's that or not!!

Earthing is massive issue on Defenders, spend time thoroughly cleaning and ensuring all earths have a clean solid connection, will definitely pay in the long run!

Ive recently experienced this exact problem with the reverse light so finally Decided to purchase a brand new loom of flebay which I intend fitting when swapping the chassis over. :)

Fear!!!

But if I'm honest, it's because my Brother-in-laws friend is selling his galvanised chassis for not a lot of pennies (just as well as I possess even fewer pennies). Originally he bought it to have his replaced, only to have his Landy stolen.

Quite possible I will buy it and it will sit in the garage until required. If I could rent the space I would love to strip the defender and rebuild it. What a great learning curve and would certainly help developed my maintenance skills!!
 
I've earthed both bulb holders to the tub and still the same. No brake lights at all, and when I put side lights on the brake lights come on instead. Where else to look or any ideas lol...
 
You've definitely not cross wired them have you.?! I would start with running a temporary positive wire to the brake light and then side lamps to eliminate variables. I'm still drawn to the earth being the issue. Bypass the eart to the tub, go directly to negative on the battery to test!

Have you got a multimeter.?!

Keep with it mate you'll get it. :)
 
I have no idea where to run new wires from am a complete novice at electrics.

There is power going from the brake switch but it's not picking any power up at the bulb holders. For the red wire in the holder what do I run it to and the green where to as I'm gana run new wires I think be easyer :rolleyes: is the red side light and green brake light?
 
Somone elp or she be going into the garage to get done am nearly fed up with it!! Haynes diagrams of wiring loom is very confusing! :(

Just need to know what to run the wires from the side light bulb holders to! Thanks.

Thanks for that, where does the wiring for it start, does it go from the brake light switch and then run back through the chassis to it? And sidelights I'm guessing just straight off the switch on the steering column?
