Wiring in a winch

Hi all

To wire in my winch correctly I believe I need to run the cable form the winch along the chassis to the battery box.

35mm, 3 mtr should do??

I would also like to install a cut out switch and have found a company on thetinternet that sells a pack containing 2x 3 mtrs and an extra .5 mtr lead for the cutout switch

I know these are already terminated but £50 + Postage Come On!!! There mustbe a cheaper way :doh:

Has anyone else bought any recently and if so where from….

Ill say it politely before someone else isnt quite so friendly.

£50 is a touch on the expensive side though. Google "wire gauge calculator" or "awg calculator" to work out what cable diameter you need.

You should be able to get most cable from b and q or from a hardware shop. and a battery cut out switch(for your winch) from halfords or a motor spares place.

There is a thread in the FAQ about how to wire a winch up etc etc.

catch the powerline boys somewhere,they got off cuts in their vans.

Think about wiring in a relay under the bonnet so you can do away with the hand held lead and instead have a toggle switch in the cab, believe it's a relay off a FLT.

have al ook on winchit .co.uk think they do a reasonably priced wiring kit

however B&Q only stock household cable etc not heavy duty car battery stuff... Halfords, well what can I say re Halfords

Ive found various reels on fleabay but again cant be sure its going to be any good.

I thought to wire in on a Defender it needed to be at least 3 mtrs
you reckon 2.8 will be long enough

Make sure you buy an isolator rated to match your winch, Some winches can draw in excess of 400 amps continuosly, I would be wanting 60mm square cable which is rated around 415 amps. Dont forget to get P clips to attache the cables to the chassis, Thats what i used on mine, The wireless remotes are great defo recommend them.

And donr forget to run the earth cable all of the way back to the battery as well, It is the most common reason for poor winch performance---- bad earth

So you managed to attach your cables along the side of the chassis using P clips
some people have told me to try and get the cables as high on top of the chassis as poss and use cable ties,...

P clips do seem a much better way, tad tricky getting the drill bit in there though?

They have to go along the side of the chassis at the front as the power steering pipes etc ar in the way so i used tie wraps there. I then ran them along the top of the front chassis leg then they had to go on the side again as the passed the bulkhead and into the battery box.

The problem using tie wraps, the can be chaffing against any rough bits on the chassis causing a short, the crap and crud can get under the cables and not be washed out properly, Tie wraps can burst when you give the bottom of the chassis a rattle off of big rocks(i have tore brackets of the chassis this way) I bought the rubber lined P clips and stainless steel screws to attach them
