I've fitted a couple of marine grade 12v sockets into my cubby. I also have a couple of carling switches in my cubby. Can I take the wires from these to power the sockets?
I'd rather that than run extra wires all the way from fuse panel.

What do you mean "all the way from your fuse panel?" in a defender that's a joke, it's probably the shortest wire run I have ever seen.

Do it the right way than causing a fire and loosing your Landy, no short cuts to doing electrical work properly.

Run the correct gauge wires and the reason you are adding more 12 volt sockets is because you need more power and loading the electrical system more....so do it properly.

Where you need bigger gauge wires and bigger fuses, install them.

Can't remember exactly where I took the power for the switches. I know it was from an ignition switched 12v feed somewhere.

You need to look into that and most importantly make sure that it's fuse protected from as close to the source as possible.

You can purchase in line fuse holders which use the same fuses as the Landy.
