Friends ‘01 td5 defender 90 has had the wipers pack up. They just stop working but do not blow the fuse. Has happened a couple of times now. So far the things we have checked are the mechanical side of it and this has lead us to believe it is likely an electrical problem.

The wiper arm wheel boxes move freely and are packed with fresh grease. However you can not operate then wiper cable by hand (motor removed) is this normal? You can pull it downwards and it will operate the wipers but you cannot push it upwards. If you use the wipers to move it they move freely and offer equal resistance in both directions.

Checked the park switch by swapping them between vehicles and made no differance.

Have checked that the motor is working both both by bench testing and by plugging back into the loom while disconnected.

Have used a mulitmetre to voltage on the loom plug (more to make sure there was some than anything else) but not really sure what the correct values should be. Some pins were showing 12volts and some were showing 8V is this normal? While checking this a couple of times there was repeated clicking (relay quickly
Turning On and off) from the fuse box. Is this likely to be a sign the wiper relay is failing?

Once we had done all of this they were working again so reassembled everything. But on the journey back home they stopped working again. This has happened a couple of times now. A fiddle about to inspect and they then work. But not for very long.

Does anyone have any suggestions for other things to check, how to properly check the electrics, ornother common faults that could be causing this problem?

Try swapping the red* relay behind the instrument binnacle (some models had the relay in the fusebox), this operates the intermittent facility, but could cause problems elsewhere. I replaced mine with a cheap pattern one first, and it caused other faults so I bought an OEM one and they have worked fine since. What is it they say " buy cheap - buy twice" !!!

*original relays were red replacement pattern ones are black

The last time I had hassle with my wipers it turned out to be the parking switch. They only worked intermittently and, in my case, kept blowing the fuse. When I removed the park switch from the motor I could hear something rattling about inside it. I put a new one on and have had no problems since. Probably worth changing the switch anyway as it's very cheap and easy while you have the wiper motor out.

I don’t think it is the park switch as swapped my one onto his vehicle and it made no differance. The plan is to swap it out anyway because it did not look in the best condition and I know they are renowned for causing problems.

if you cant push pull the wipers by moving the rack with motor disconnected theres an issue with rack and tubing or wheel boxes and spindles
