Wiper spindles rotten

Hi all. Hope you are all healthy and coping well through these difficult times.....I have a quick question. My suffix B Range Rover which I am currently trying to bring up to roadworthy condition had been lying up outside for 8 years in the elements and while it survived quite well considering, I have just noticed my windscreen wiper spindles behind the rotten rubbers are just a pile of swollen flakey rust with no determinable shape. Can anyone tell me what is supposed to be there. I can see spindle that is still connected to the wiper arms but all else is just rust?
