Here I was enjoying a nice drive in this great car ( 2003 V8 petrol) it was starting to rain, so put on the rear wiper, it did two strokes then stopped in the middle of the window. I got home and straight on here, for the people out there who can give great advice on these very temperamental vehicles.
I didn't realise that this wiper could cause so trouble, decided to bite the bullet. Took it off the car, took it apart, what a bloody mess. The plastic gear was the culprit, so ordered a new one, whilst waiting for it to arrive, took the thing apart (piccs later), apart from all sorts of debris in the motor worm gear, dried grease, it wasn't as bad as I thought.. The motor is a fixed magnet, so seems stiff to pull apart, but on inspection it seems to have phosphor bronze bearings, which is good really, just soak them in oil, when I say oil I mean a light oil not engine, after a few hours the oil level will drop as it is absorbed by the bearings, so top up again, you might have prop up the parts, as I did to keep them sort of level. Take of the brushes pack off, clean the commutator and reassemble the brush pack, use your finger nails to push the brushes back into their holder.. Cleaned all the rust off the various spindles and posts. The new part arrived wouldn't fit the cycling part, the hole was slightly too small, a quick sanding did the trick. Swop the small magnet to the new gear, this is vital, without it you are screwed. To set the gear in the right place, with motor in your left hand, insert the gear so the magnet is just under the cycling part of the gear train or about 11 o'clock. If possible don't put the top cover on connect to the car, have a screwdriver handle or similar, as the motor turns the gear will ride up out of its mount use the handle to knock it back, watching the cycling gear as well, this will make sure you have the parking of the wiper right. I was dead chuffed when it worked beautifully and a lot less noisy too.
The gear was £7.56, I used a lithium based grease, just a good dab on the motor worm gear and a light coating on the plastic one, a light oil on all the other moving parts. In all saved about £219
