Apologies in advance about this query as I'm sure it's cropped up many a time. Confess to be struggling with navigating site. Anyway, got a 55 plate defender 90. Drivers side wiper arm seems a bit slack and doesn't always return to resting place properly. Sometimes it even goes a bit too far over when in use. Passenger side is fine. Before I start stripping out the dash to investigate I'd like advice on possible cause so that I can get the right parts in readiness and get it all done in one go. Any suggestions very much appreciated. Don't mind getting parts that might be surplus but don't want to strip her down and find I need something I've overlooked. Thanks

Morning,

May be a silly question, but have you checked it is not just the wiper arm splines are worn and slipping on the drive spigot splines?

Cheers

As above if its not worn ....I had to replace the wiper motor parking/return switch on mine but mine
is older not sure if the td5 has the same set up ;)

Thanks, yes I've checked this. The splines are fine. Its the drive spigot that seems to have some play in it. I don't know (yet) what's behind this, I think there's a wheel box from what I've read so far that's cable operated (welcome any corrections on that).

Thanks. I think I'm gonna just take it apart. I'll see how it's set up, see what's faulty and then get the requisite part(s). It needs sorting before we get into frozen screen season. When the screens wet it seems better but something's not as it should be.

The the Rave workshop manual has a good write up of how to remove and work on the wipers.

Cheers

As you have checked the spline, have you also checked the spline adaptor, which is held in place by a grub screw into the shaft, and which tends to work itself loose by about an eighth of a turn, which is just enough to give symptoms similar to yours ... and mine were neither imperial nor metric (don't ask!!) so I ended up tapping it out to M4 and fitting a new grub screw.

Well I've ordered two new wheel boxes and a cable. But I'll check the grub screw first. Cheers for that.
