It looks like I have a problem with the linkage as the drivers side wiper isn't working. I've hit a problem straight away, prying the wiper arms off of the spindles. In the Haynes manual it talks of prying them off with a flat bladed screwdriver but they aren't budging despite being soaking in WD40 for a good while. Any tips?

They should come off pretty easily and shouldn't be stuck. I just lifted the wiper arm up then jiggled them about and they came off no problem. I take it you've undone the 13mm nuts holding them on?

I bought a natty little wiper arm puller from Machine Mart for very little money...worth it's weight in gold. Or you could use a 2 leg puller.
TIP- put a smear of copper grease on the spline before refitting and don't forget to align the blade with the crosses "+" on the windscreen.

The nuts came off fine but the arms aren't budging, I tried a small C-Clamp as a puller but that's not budging them either. Think I'll have to invest in puller off eBay.

Thanks for the tips, I'll put some copper grease back on the spline when I refit.

I had the same problem.

A right pain as they're a tapered spline too.

A good soaking, then support the arm only and give a slight tap. (Leave the nut on but unwind it until the top surface of the nut is flush with the top of the splined arm. That protects the thread and the top of the splined arm).

If you'd like a tip on how to remove the 6 black circular plastic "rivets/clips", I'm open to pursuation !

I found the easiest way of pulling the "Pins" out of the plastic Scrivets is to screw a cup hook into the hole and just pull them out. You could use a self tapping screw and a pair of pliers, but I found the cup hook easy.

:)

Just replaced the rear arm , used a drop of white spirit to break the seal , seems to work better than wd , slight tap with a small hammer and it popped off !

I've ordered a puller as I've had another go and they seem stuck fast despite trying all suggestions.

Thanks for tips, especially for getting the plastic rivets out.

Yep, I used a self tapper and a pair of pliers !

If you do manage to break the clips holding the trim covering the wiper motor the part number is DYQ000010.
For what they are they're £10 to replace so try not to break them ;)

I don't suppose you happen to have the part number of the trim covering, it seems to be called the "windscreen leading edge cowl" but haven't been able to locate a p/n for it. My 2002 Freelander went back to the dealer I bought it from because the driver side rear wheel was binding (handbrake) which lead to clutch damage. When I got the car back the trim was broken on driver & passenger side directly above the bonnet hinges, I can only assume they raised the bonnet too far. Now I'm waiting for them to get the trim part to replace it, reckon if I get the p/n it might speed things along.

try slacking the nuts to the end of thread and then push up and down on wiper arm [with arms in normal position] at the point where the pivot is this usualy breaks the the taper fit,it worked on mine and most other cars i do
