Winter tyres

Evening all,

When I bought my 300Tdi, it had a set of Insa Turbo Sahara tyres fitted that were little used. I took them off for the Summer and bought a set of alloys and had some cheapo Runway boots fitted that have been a treat for the price/grip/noise/wear.

Now Winter is back and we live in the Staffordshire Moorlands, would you say I'm OK fitting the Saharas back on or should I find something less aggressive?

All depends on what you want to do

M/T's are ok in deep soft snow off piste basically, but compact snow on the road would be more difficult. Can be and is done no problem, but the driver has to know the tyres

If you didn't need M/T's in summer, are you going to use them in winter?

by the sound of it as you had them in shed all summer they're not needed and just "for the look" so forget M/T and road tyre swaps, just get some A/T's for year round use

Grabber AT2 are good I have them on mine, but General have just released their new AT2 tyre and the older ones are getting a little harder to get.

My Mate BrianS has a set of AT2 and finds them great, they do look nice as well, I am looking to get a new set of rubber soon as my lift will be going on and I want bigger tyres.

I am also thinking of AT's as some have meantioned that MT's are less gripy in the ice/compact snow, and it makes sence as theres less rubber on the road.

Mmmm decisions.......
I'm a newbie to the scene, 300tdi ES (not that the electric toys actually work!).
I have pirelli Scorpion ST all round. Back 2 need replacing NOW. The front 2 have a good 6/7mm left.
I've now started venturing down some lanes with a big smile on my face and can see myself doing this more and more. Disco will also be used in summer for beach launching a small boat.
I believe the Scorpion's are more of a road tyre?
Do I
A: just put 2 new Scorpion's on the back. Cheap option.
B: put 2 AT? tyre's on the back and keep the Scorpion's on the front.
C: sell the 2 good Scorpion's and fit some decent AT's?
Looking at General Grabber AT2 (£85, Tyres Direct UK) or BF Goodrich T/A KM2 RWL (£114 Tyres Direct UK) - are these the best options for my intended use.
Tyre's need to be 235/70/16 - I'm not reedy for lifts and cutting bodywork. Currently insured with no mod's (cost a fortune as i have no, no claims bonus, company car for last 8 years).

Done.
Just got back from Manningtree Tyres.
Agreed a price of £420 inc VAT and fitting.
Dropping off tomorrow morning. I'll let you know how they perform.
forecasting snow by end of week. Ohhh i hope they are right.

PS - Anyone want to purchase 2 Pirelli Scorpion ST tyres. apx 5 - 6 mm each.

I have had a co car for the last 15 yrs, and just rang the co insurance co and asked for proof of no claims. They sent it no problem, and as long as it states vehicle was used for social as well as work use, all insurance co's accept it as proof of no claims, assuming that is, you have not claimed of course

Just be careful with the change of tyres. I have Cooper Discoverer ST's and you will find they are not as good at some things. Mine are OK for most things but slippy as hell in the rain.

Tyre's were great in the snow. Drove up a nice steep field with a good 6" of snow no problem at all. Likewise on compacted snow and they do look great!!!
Road noise is more than acceptable.
Unfortunately the snow has all but melted.
I'll be hiding from the family between Christmas and new year sorting all the oils and filters. Then its onto some local green lanes.
