So I've just been to visit my grandma and when I came out my windscreen is cracked. I assume a passing car has flicked a stone at it. Autoglass can't repair it because it's too big.

Does anyone know where I can get a windscreen and seal for under £50 or should I just let them stick me a genuine and very expensive one for £50?

My excess is £500. Free repair, £50 if I let autoglass do it and £70 if I do it then claim. The problem is it's right in front of me and 30 mil wide so autoglass won't touch it.

If it's a crack it can't be repaired. That's the problem I have, my excess is 70 and I can get a new windscreen for 50 and fitted for 20!?

I think I'm going to just let autoglass do it then because looking at windscreens on the internet it looks like they are over £200. Am I right? I know series windows are only something like £20 so why the difference? I'd expect all new windows are laminated.

With the hassle of trying to find a new/replacement screen at a reasonable price and then having it fitted you might as well just pay the windscreen excess and have it replaced on your policy. Make sure you get a new seal first though as that isn't included in the policy and you don't want them to re-use the old one as they all crack/split eventually.
My windscreen excess is £50 and I have had three heated ones in the last few years plus a couple of free repairs, you pay for the policy and if it meets the criteria for replacement then use it.

"what's the chance of getting one put in this time? "

Quite possible, doesn't cost anything to ask.

I have had a heated one for years so it has always been replaced like for like but when I was having another one fitted last year (several of the elements had broken in the old one) I asked the chap what he could have fitted if I had just had a normal screen and he said he would have ordered a heated one for me anyway. That said, I doubt the likes of Autoglass would be so accomodating but as my policy lets me use any company (up to £300 per claim and after that I HAVE to go through Autoglass) I stick with my local chap.

Auto glass are funny about fitting a heated screen in a defender that isn't installed with one already, as they work off the vehicle reg. Took me ages to try and convicnce them it was possible! And in the end they said they couldn't really do it and get the insurance company to pay. (Plus they were 3 times the price of anywhere else!!)

Try nation wide windsceens, they don't tell the insurance company what they stick in, just give them a bill. Very helpful and much better prices.

I have a second hand screen (no cracks / chips), frame (in beige) and new seal (as old one is knackered) that i'm sticking on ebay this weekend......
