For the last couple of years I have been promising to get the rubber seal on the windscreen of my 90 (200Tdi) changed, the old seal being old and crusty and generally breaking up.
So I have had a new seal in stock waiting for me to pluck up the cohones to get on with it, being a bit wary of the job, I have just ignored it, always on the bottom of the list.
Then I decided to pay a garage who specialises in classic cars and windscreens to do the job. I supply the seal and €70.00 and they do the job while I go and have a coffee. As luck would have it they bust the screen, so it is decided that they supply and fit a new screen and seal - the blame was put on the seal I supplied, well it was Britpart - the costs to be borne by my insurers, as if broken by a stone or some such. Job done a couple of days later, all well and good, the bill I was given was €770.00 :eek:, good job the insurers are going to pay it, I presented them with the bill the next day.

Anyway, one bonus to come from this, I took out the dash/heater vent panel to make access easier, and before putting all back together I modified the washer system, this has turned into a huge improvement on the old system. I shall link to a vid below.

I did this to mine years ago using a set of Peugeot 405 wiper spray bars and it is one of the best modifications I have ever done. I am looking to do it to my td5 and have found these spray bars that attached to the wiper (link). what did you use?

No heated screen, don't really want one, I am retired and very rarely bother to leave the house if it's cold enough for a frosty screen.

I used std washer tube via some grommets through the bulkhead terminating in a small 3 jet (directional) block that clips onto the end of the wiper arm near the blade. I shall try and get a photo in the next couple of days.

A couple of turns around the heater hose is good in colder climes too ...

£770 to supply and fit a Defender screen and seal?

Good job your insurance is paying! I was charged £350 to fit an aftermarket heated screen and OE seal. Although prices may have risen, in the three years since l had it done.

Why was it so much money to fit a new windscreen?
Presumeably because they could charge it to the insurance. And this is why perfectly good motors get scrapped because it costs more to fix them/and the projected cost of the hire car, than the book price of the motor.
And this is also why car insurance costs so much.
Unfortunately I find myself being part of the problem.

I was reimbursed today for the screen/seal/labour minus €80 which is the excess, so it ends up a new screen and rubber fitted for the cost to me of €80 instead of the cheaper, original job of just replacing the seal for €70.
Just how much the insurance is going to be loaded next year is anyones guess.
