You'll get mixed reviews whoever you ask, some people will favour top spec Warns, others like budget Champions and other will like the value and performance from Superwinch, Goodwinch etc etc

The name doesn't do it any favours for me though  :D

I'm just looking for a budget winch with a synthetic rope that will perform well for general off road recovery. Not everyday use.

there from poole way in dorset..the guy has 3 sheds in his garden full or ropes n winches all cheap chinese stuff that he imports by the container full

i had 3 ropes off him that all failed

So not worth it then. He's selling a lot of winches so who's buying them. What have you got

I had a winchmax, worked fine, then, a year later stopped working altogether. I keep meaning to strip it but, not had time yet.

Also, it had a steel wire on, but, as soon as it had wound off once and wound back on, it was the maximum amount the spool could handle, so, even the slightest miss-alignment when winching in caused the wire to bunch up and lock up the winch.

I *think* winchmax are the same as any other cheap chinese winch - i think it's just one company who makes them, then, different people brand them.

yes i have 2 winch's from winch it, one is 3 years old, other is 2 years old and iv never had a problem with them so far.
they are a good winch for self recovery, but in no way would they last at winch challenge.

get a warn 8274, iv got one now :p

Looks like a decent one,I'm getting a Goodwinch next month in Billing, I'd rather pay a bit more and get something that has a good name and if all goes tits up, I can at least get parts for it :D

Spoke to goodwinch earlier and they sell a totally waterproof winch. And like you say they are getting a good name. Believe you can get a discount at billing so may be the way to go. They are made in china but what goodwinch specifies. Still looking but this seems the best so far and proper backup.

I might see you there :D They are the same as King One TDS winches but with David Bowyer's own 'Bow Motor' and as you said waterproofed electrics, and I've heard very good tings about them on this forum and in the Land Rover magazines :)
