Right, I've just fitted a winch to my 90, I have a champion C10000N 10,000lbs winch! Ideal for towing the old girl out tricky situations! Only problem is when using the winch it drains the battery quicker than the alternator can top it up! I've tried running the engine at various speeds still no joy!

Any suggestions what may cause this? Should I wire into a secondary battery?

Any help will be much appreciated it's not much good to me when it's like this!

Luke

This could get expensive, really need two batteries and possibly a high output alternator.
If its a 200 engine, some of the alts are only 45 amp, I think you can get up to 70amp on the A127 as std, take a look on ebay several high output ones.
Pretty sure the 300 models have higher outputs still

you answered your own question mate, your best option is a twin alternator/battery setup, or to save some cash you can use a split charge system, but beware not all split charges are equal, many are just for occasional light duty operations not for repeated hard deep charging like a winch battery can need.
what about your winch wiring, is is done with a neutral return back to the battery or just relying on the chassis for this. Are you using good quality cable, in this case bigger is really better ( mines on 50mm2 welding cables for all winch wiring).
and as lynall said what output is your alternator and how goods your battery.

The cables that came with it are more than adequate enough positive and negative both go back to the battery. I have checked the alternator it's only 45amp, I have looked at putting a 100amp 300tdi alternator on and an extra battery for the winch alone I think that's the best option to me!

Depends how much you use the winch? On my old 200TDi 90 I had 1 alternator (think it was higher than 45amp though) and a single battery which was a big bugger out of a lorry I think. A higher output alternator and a decent sized battery should be plenty, don't think there is any need to go twin battery.

Luke whereabouts in suffolk are you?, I have a nearly new truck battery in my garage
You can also tweak your current alt set up for less than 12 quid.

What ah and cca is your current battery? I had a 650cca battery on mine when I bought it and the warn xd9000 worked aswell as it now does with 2 2000cca and 172ah,

The battery is probably shot or not big enough, or the alternator is 2 small or shot,

I run a 8274 on the front with a bigger motor and 70mm2 cables and a xd9000 in the back on 50mm2 cables, I gave 2 newmax battery's wired in parallel with no split charge, 86ah each 1000cca each, as they are wired it gives 12v 172ah and 2000cca

I'm in Crawley Sussex mate.

Yeah I think I might put a 100amp 300tdi alternator on and up grade the battery as it's a older Bosch battery looks like it needs renewing!

Any suggestions on what size? Amp hour ect?

Luke

With batteries bigger is basically better.
Ive got a numax think its 1000cca I thinks this is a bit of numax bollacks, but its been of for 4 years so far not perfect but seems fine so far, 85 quid iirc.
Have to say I have a pto winch, so no batteries needed!
