Hi got a 95 defender 90 that has a winch bumper fitted due to upgrading ive just bought a 2011 tdci and want to make it look just like my old one question is are winch bumpers legal on newer machines since the bullbar law changed in 2008 i don't know if it applies to winch bumpers tho grey area

Well, Im guessing here, but logically so.
A bumper isnt a bullbar.
The original bumper is still a steel bar, they just added plastic endcaps.
so the winch bummper is fine, as long as it doesnt have an A Bar.
A winch/bumper is also on the official accessories/options list.

Pedestrians should be more careful, and we all know that Landys don't play well with small cars either! Nowt wrong with big bits of functional metal up front IMO, but that's just my opnion which of course counts for sod all.

The authorities haven't banned slab fronted vehicles and they do a good job of killing peds too.. bloody nanny state this, nanny state that...

I've had a winch bumper fitted to my 97 disco for 5 years and have never been stopped by the law, and there's plenty of them round here. It's declared on my insurance which is the main thing. If you are with a mainstream insurance company, they don't like mods and maybe won't insure you. Best to find out before throwing the old bumper away.I fitted mine just after renewing, they didn't want to insure me and wouldn't refund, cost me £300! Go with the specialist landy insurance.

From memory the Law re bull bars only stops the manufacture of them.
But I would take some advice before you fit it.
Read this for starters just to be certain your winch bumper would not be classed as a bull bar in law.

Check your insurance are happy with it too.

On a related subject, Many years ago I was selling winches so I thought lets make a few bumpers, once we did the stress and load calcs it was shocking to find the number of winch bumpers for sale that we felt didn't meet the basic design specs and would have failed in use.
So the lesson is buy from a reputable supplier I am not against home made as long as you know what you are doing

its not so much the law regarding fitting them .

let your insurance know.

many have stipulated no bullbars.

Im in oz just now - they love a good roo bar.

Where i live in the north east of scotland we have just as much chance of hitting a deer on the road as we do of hitting roo here.......
