Hi guys,

Looking to buy a winch which will be used for numerous things but most of all to pull logs out of hard to reach areas. I need a winch bumper and not too sure what is best. I have a defender 110 and I have been looking at tubular bumpers and regular ones do they both work well or one work better than the other. Also what electric winch should I buy for a budget of around £600?

600 wont get you a good winch that will last long if you want something to last you neet to spend at least 1000 warn 9.5 ti will do then a shadow winch bumper @ 360 then rope @200/360 so budget for at least 1500

Im not sure thats true or where you get your figures from. £200-360 for rope?

bumper wise, get one from a reliable retailer. first four (shadow bumpers) are good guys to go to as is David Bowyer at goodwinch. get one that not only uses the original 4 bolts but the 2 on the side also. 6 point mounting will add more strength, especially laterally.

winch wise, good makes are: Warn, Superwinch, Goodwinch, Milemarker, Red winches.

for £600 I would speak to Bowyer at Goodwinch. you can get one to suit your needs for this much with change to spare.

rope? stick to and learn with steel. for pulling logs especially where you will continuously pull the rope through mud/rocks a synthetic will not last long before it shreds itself. upgrade to synth later on if you feel you really need it. with your spare change buy your rigging equipment and a good pair of working gloves to handle the steel rope.

either way, Bowyer is your man.

i agrree with g...me personally i detest steel ropes in an offroad recovery situation as i have seen one snap and it went straight thru a rr rear window and took the passenger headrest clean off.plasma ropes front and rear on me 90

but as g says a synthetic rope wont last 5 mins doing what you intend too but a steel rope will, just treat it with respect

Guys, thanks so much for the advice. I agree with the wire rope as it will stand more abuse. I don't plan on doing much recovery work unless I get stuck, i realise that you all use your winches for different applications and opinions will vary.

Thanks again,

Alex
