Right, got my dirt cheap 2nd hand winch delivered to day, works better than the ad says. Motor runs fine, gears are all good, don't think it has a free spool but can live without it. The only thing that isnt working is the brake, the components of which are here -

As the drive shaft spins, the whole asssembly spins with it. When it stops, the two end bits twist the dual sping thingy which then expands, and therefore acts as a brake

As far as i can see, the problem is that one of the lugs on the end of the spring thing has snapped off. it should look like this

Now then, the winch makers (ryders winches)want nothing whatsoever to do with it. Their tech department were useless. They cary no spare parts for this older winch. the only thing they said they could do was sell me a whole new brake and drum for £250:eek:.

So does anyone have a winch which has a similar sort of brake mechanism, or know of somewhere/someone that could make up a new spring? Its actually 2 opposite wound springs interloked as far as i can make out.

oh and its a ryder retriever rr8000

cheers
