hi all, will an omega 2.5 td camshaft fit in my p38 dse ? i know there both m51 bmw lumps, but wondered if there were any differences ?, any info would be appreciated as my mates friend has a brand new one.

hello wammers, thats great, thanks. if i did change my cam what else should i replace with it ?.

The tappet barrels if you want to be technically correct. But if the old ones are flat unmarked with no dishing you would maybe get away without doing that. But it is best practice to change two surfaces that bear on each other at the same time.

I wouldn't risk it, they wear as a pair, put new followers in, or the ones from where the cam came matching the lifters to the cam lobes.

Think i already said that. But if the old ones are flat, no marks, no dishing fitting a new cam to them he may get away with. You would never fit a second hand cam on your old barrels.

There are diferent power/torque outputs on the various apllications of the M51, I've no idea if the camshaft is part of the different states of tune though.

I think all the basic engines are the same. Different engine mapping caters for the differences in performance.

hi wammers, stuckagainsteve, and data, sorry ive only just got back to you all, but got called away, so, last year there was a very faint tapping which i thought was the tappets, so replaced the hole lot (with genuine items) got it all back together (yes youve guest it) tap tap tap, still there, had the stethoscope on it and its coming from between 5 or 4 cylinders, everything was very clean in the head when it was apart (no blue heat marks) and didnt look like any wear marks either, but now just thinking about it, my compression test last week read 450psi 450, 440 450 & so on, maybe a problem at #4 cylinder causing the tapping noise?, anyway hence the camshaft question? i would of thought the cam in the p38 might have been stronger than the omega or bmw car because of the off road thing, stronger turbo and more engine grunt, (if thats right that is ?) the engine is running really nice especially after the service last weekend, but this tapping really drives me nuts, diagnostics came back with nothing, my mates friend has a T3 (i think it was) machine which just said i had some faults with my A/C which i already know about, so, any ideas ?, thanks bobby.

We swapped an omega engine in to a p38, it took ages, you need both engines and 2 engine stands, the short motor is the same but there are loads of little external bits different

this aint a engine swap question fellas, for some reason the titles been cut short, the engines already swapped over, thanks anyway, bobby.

what an idiot, the answers right in front of me, loads of people have swapped engines omega to p38 and had to change various things as the fellas have just said sump, f.i.p and so on, but nobody has ever had to change the camshaft, i think job done! (unless im wrong again ?).
