will a 200tdi engine fit into a defender 90 that currently has a 2.5 td engine will it need modifing in any way or will it go straight in?
I am a complete novice at this with no landy experiance? can anybody help? will any of the ancillary's need changing too? would it be better to change the gear box aswell?

any advice would be greatly appreciated thanx :D
 
If you want it cheap its possible to fit a Disco 200tdi. Ull need a big angle grinder, a welder, a sledge hammer and a lot of duck tape to hold it all in. :p :D

Mine was still there last time i checked. Was well worth getting done, it drives much nicer now especialy when it comes to the motorways. The last MPG calculation i did came up at 32mpg!!!

Now...how much are V8 going for theses days :rolleyes:
 
Tis a very worthwhile conversion!!! It will go but you need to know what yer doing. Inportant points to note are that the disco engine layout is a bit different, mounting points to the chassis are the same but you will need a new downpipe for the exhaust, the air box will no longer fit and will need significant modification (the alternator on a disco 200 is right in the way) so either fit lots of piping to get air to the engine or mount an air intake filter in the engine compartment, you will need to replace the radiator to accommodate the intercooler (the disco one fits but the mountings need lowering), the plumbing for the power steering will have to be altered (but can certainly be easily done), and you will need a new temperature gauge from a defender TDi (thanks Yella!!!) If you dont know what yer doin, you should be able to get the job done for about a grand (and a bit possibly) to do it properly with a good replacement engine. Might as well put a heavy duty clutch in while yer at it, and replace the cambelt. It should pay for itself within a year! (and be wayyyy nicer to drive!)

Alternatively a defender 200 engine will pretty much go straight in but they cost 3-4 times as much to buy and are slightly less powerful.
 
The guy i bought my engine off offered to fit it for £200 and i got the gear box and transfer box in the deal too! Thing is, he put the transfer box in place then lined up the engine afterwards, therfore cutting off the engine mounts and welding them back on else where. I think this was because the gear box was a different leangth, if its just the engine im 90% sure u dont have to touch the mounts which is handy. Im begining to regret whats been done to my chassis, as the conversion is different to all the other conversions out there, and i cant fit a Disco to defender down pipe, ive got a cut and shut disco downpipe on a disco exhaust suspended benith my chassis.

Theres loads of info and technical instruction on the conversion, its worth doing properly.
 
The Disco 200TDI turbo outlet pipe doesn't appear to fit normally, if I've judged this correctly. I've seen 2 methods of overcoming this (other than using a Defender manifold & turbo), a pipe that replaces the outlet pipe and swings to the exhaust (either TD or TDI type) or an agled adapter than moves the turbo through aprox 30 degrees to make the turbo outlet pipe end up further forward and miss the bulkhead.

Does anybody have any other suggestions?

Also, does anybody know anywhere that sells the steel engine mount brackets that weld to the chassis?

I can only think AndrewC means the pipe from the turbo to the intercooler, which can pretty easily be botched from the TD turbo intake pipe (sorry Yella!!) - have a look at the fred i did a coupla weeks ago which had some photos on it of the engine bay with the disco conversion, which shows why bits don't fit in very well!

that's a right bodge job - better off dropping the tranny box off the disco and leaving the orginal GB in place, then you can use the existing mount locations

i can't see how anyone could do a proper job for £200, that would probably just pay someone for a few days labour - there'd be no new clutch/arm/release bearing included - did he change fluids correctly or re-use the old? - did he drill and tap the bell housing etc etc

these are better er and cheaper

defender 90/110 discovery engine conversion down pipe on eBay, also, Land Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 17-May-08 16:16:19 BST)

and he's doing a usefull top intercooler pipe section which is also much more cost effective than the SP kit
 
Sorry for not being clear, yes Woods767 guessed the bit I meant, I didn't call it the down pipe as I thought some might think I mean the first part of what I'd call the exhaust.
The Steve Parker is the one I'd referred to about either fitting a TD exhaust or a 20TDi exhaust. So I guess that's the best way
 
Sean, the guy did fit me a new clutch kit which i provided, and the job is very tidy. I dont know why he offered to fit it so cheap, but i payed him £650 for the engine and i wouldent have bought it for that much without the deal on fitting. He's done a fair fiew in the past, normaly does disco 200tdis into old rangerovers. As for the fluids i changed them when i got it back. Like i said, the exhaust system is the only bit thats been bodged.
