My 96 300TDi Auto has developed a strange knocking noise whenever I switch the engine off. When I switch the engine off and the old diesel lump shudders to a halt you can briefly hear a metallic knocking / clanking noise much like the exhaust hitting the engine. Over the past few weeks it has become louder but I can't seem to pin point where it is coming from. I have led under the wagon with the engine running and got the wife to switch it off and the sound seems to be coming from high up in the engine bay. I cant see anything out of place and as the noise only lasts for a split second I'm buggered if I can find the cause.
Can anyone tell me what it is likely to be? (and that it will only cost £0.59 in parts to put right)
