Why the discrepancy?

Hi, recently bought myself a 90. Hurray!
First registered November 1986. Thing is the chassis number, correct on the vehicle and log book indicates a1983-84 manufacture date. Assume 1984 as it’s a 90. That means anything between 2 and up to almost 3 years from build to first registration, depending when it was made in 1984.
Anyone any idea why such a difference?

Could have been a dealer demo car run on his plates and then registerd when sold.

Must have been owned and used by the queen on one of her estates

Mine's on an E plate (88) and the VIN and build cert are for 1985. Turns out it was exported to Austria for 3 years and then registered on return to UK. VIN also states it a LHD but it is definitely a RHD. All kosher but I'd like to know it's history; unfortunately the DVLA no longer give out PO details.
Any of the above are possible, most likely what @tottot said, although it may have been one of Ma'ams...

On the front of the v5 does it say 'was previously used overseas' or 'declared new at first registration'?

Still waiting for the V5 to come through. Just got the green slip at the moment. Will check when it arrives though.

My VIN states it’s a RHD station wagon with the 19J turbo diesel, though it now sports a 200tdi conversion. Might have been one of the first diesel turbo’s?
It was originally white by the paint under the transmission tunnel, but is currently mainly blue. New paint job is one of the many jobs to do on a rolling restoration. Doesn’t look like one of ma’am’s does it?

If it was an early 90 it would have lift up door handles like mine. 1986 seems the correct date as i am sure td came in that year as well. Did you check the number on the chassis or just under the bonnet.

In the door frame where the catch sits, what's it look like? Can you post a pic?

A feature of early 90/110's is a bonnet lock on the front grill surround, that is not visible on yours.

Doesn’t have a Bonnet lock.

I haven’t checked underneath, though the chassis is in excellent condition so may not be original anyway. I’ll have look at the weekend if I get chance.

Sounds like 86 is right, don’t suppose they had an older chassis lying around for a few years though. I guess I may never find out. Perhaps human error.

One of mine was built in 1985 but not registered for the road until 1996.

From what I gather it had been touring the world in the British army.

I thought that but the army tend to keep them for more than a couple of years.

Where the door catches catch, what does the pillar look like? There should be a little triangle shaped catch for the doors you have, van you put a pic up? It will help ID if the tub is the correct age.

Seats are not from an 84/85 ninety, Wings are later, tub looks right but I could be wrong. If the nearside outer wing has a hole in it for the breather its 86>.

I had a 1985 110 CSW with the same seats, can't say they were original though as I did'nt get it until 1997.
I think my seat squabs might have been a bit strange as they were adjustable for height/angle of the squab front.

The early squabs were adjustable as you say by removing the spring loaded front rod and replacing it in alternative holes.
