I have a 51 plate 1.8 petrol Freelander which when idle only runs on 3 cylinders, when you excelerate the car it then goes to 4.

I have changed the whole injector unit with all the injectors but this has made no difference.

It has been mentioned that that head gasket could be on it way, which is the worst news possible.

Can anyone help me here as do I spend £500 on a new head gasket or get rid of it!

get rid and get a TD4.

or

get a sniffer test done on the coolant to check for combustion gases.
get a compression test done on all cylinders
get a leak down test done on all cylinders.

It all depends on how easy it is to fix your problem, however for the sake of anything long term I would swap it for a diesel. Doesn't have to be a td4, the l-series is a solid lump and cheaper.

try changing the coil packs they are notoriously weak !
mine ran like a dog at tickover till I swopped the coils
They arn't cheap though:mad:

I have found out today from a Land Rover dealer that I have a valve gone and I am looking at a bill of approx. £1000, the car is only worth £2,600.

I am gutted, I wish I had never bought it in the first place!

That sucks! Do you mean a valve on top of the cylinder?

I would get the Haynes manual out and do it myself.... Anything is possible!

When some idiot is tailgating you slam your brakes on and say a dog ran out in front.
Insurance right off and a bit extra for whiplash.

I am not much of a mechanic but if it runs ok at high revs how can this be a valve problem?
would it not miss at all revs if there was a valve / compression problem?
£1000 sounds a bit steep what are they planning on doing stick a new engine in it?

Getting screwed over is not very hard. I asked some revision companies in Holland to revise my rear differential. I got prices ranging from EUR 1250,- to EUR 1600,-. I have ordered a new one (and the better one) from Ashcroft in the UK for just GBP 415,-!

Ok, I can understand the revision companies have extra costs for importing and shipping, and of course they would want some profit, but the difference is just ridiculous.
