Why blank off EGR cooler?

Hi guys,

I'm removing the EGR system from my 02 TD5. My kit has the straight inlet tube and a blanking plate for the manifold.

People say that once you remove the corrugated tubes either side of the EGR cooler you should blank the exhaust inlet/outlets off it. Why is this necessary? The cooler is just an empty tube now?

It wont make any difference. I removed the cooler as well and flogged it on fleabay.
