Why a Discovery

I just love the Discovery - never owned one - always thought I'd get a Defender but in reality I just love the Discovery. But everyone - non owners of course slate the Landrover ingeneral. I am getting shot of a Suzuki Vatara 2.0 TD - been a good car but I need to tow my 4wheel 8x4 trailer with sometimes ton of core - sheep - horses and the poor Suzuki does it's best but does not quite get there.

So all you Discovery owners, tell me why you have one

You just told us all why we have our LandRover Discoveries!

For example, last year.
TD5 disco (2½ tons) plus a big 4 wheel trailer (over a ton) from here to Tebay (250 miles), so over 3½ tons at 55 - 60 mph steady. Place another Disco on trailer (so another 2½ tons - total gross weight now SIX TONS, and drive home again at 50 - 55 mph in among the trucks.

No stresses, no strains, no flat out full throttle driving, just a nice steady cruise both ways in 4th and 5th gears.

Oh yes - we were checking the fuel too, from full tank to full tank - 27 miles per gallon for the whole trip.

That's one reason why I have my Disco. Nothing else can do it as well.

Wanted one since I was too young to drive... when I was flush enough to buy one, it didn't seem to make good economics as I was driving up and down the country.

Had Ruby for 2.5 yrs now and can't imagine being without her!... 7 seats, big car comfort (I'm over 6ft), goes anywhere, carries more junk to the tip than I can normally find to chuck, and cruises motorways better than any 'car' I've ever driven (and I've driven loads), great view from the drivers seat, cheap to run (depending on what I run her on), easy to fix (so far) and not having a problem getting anywhere in the snow!

a little more refined than 90 or 110 nice and comfy as above 7 seats ok not the fastest but its a land rover

Goes from walking pace up hill and down dale through mud, ****e, whatever then up to 90+ on the motorway, with a heater, stereo, decent lights and comfort whilst carrying the whole family.

We also use it to tow the caravan every second weekend or so all over the country. Used to use it as a pits for the Trials bikes, Mountain bikes, Model Car Racing, Archery and as a timekeepers 'hut', a cycle racing feed station, and god only knows how many tips to the trip.

It's a general workhorse that takes anything in it's stride and which can be fixed and maintained by me.

Pretty much echoing everybody else really.

Its the versatility of the vechicle, car comfort with go anywhere ability, commanding driving postion and good looks, not to mention they are easy to work on!

I have had 3 Discoveries now, and have recently bought another as a project. They are just great fun!

We started with a Disco 200TDi which chugged its way around the country great car, we then traided her in for a Disco TD5, even better, our first long run was from Epping to Newcastle (the Angel of the North) and back in a day (we show dogs!) lazy, comfortable, economic run (and we won best dog as well!!). We still have her but she does need a new engine due to issues with the oil pump...

I have the Series III cos I've always like them and have always wanted one, uncomfortable, noisy, smelly, cost a packet to run, always need work.....but thats why we like them!!!!!

there are a million and 1 detractors of the Disco ( and Landrover in general) and yes if you get a bad one you'll spend half your time cursing it. But look carefully at them and you'll find a car that can tow just about anything you want to pull, go anywhere you could possibly want to go - uk or abroad, do it in style and comfort, pull up outside any pub, bar or restaraunt and not feel ashamed.
couple that with easy to maintain, cheap(ish) to run - a friend has a landcruiser and he has same amount of trouble as me BUT his costs a HUGE amount more to fix.
so go buy a disco - for my preference get a late disco 1 with a 300tdi - then when fuel prices go silly again you can run the bugger on vege oil.

Well i've had 3 now ..... still got 2 and 1 broken up in bits in the garage for spares

Main reason me and the Mrs got one was because we needed a BIG family car with 7 seats and we hate all the generic people carriers that are available

I also do alot of towing so the Disco seemed a safe bet there

I've always had a thing for the Camel Trophy Disco's so although i will never be able to afford one wanted to emulate one for myself ....... its getting there even if it is the wrong colour

We then got into offroading so rather than smash the family car to bits at pay n play sites we got my 200tdi and things have just progressed from there really ...... both are now heavily modified (some mods being home fabricated one offs) and enjoyed to the max

wish id never seen mine had a p38 for a while never had a prob td5 spent 2500 on it in a year if you want something for towing i would find a good fourtrak any day just watch for rot and you cant go wrong with them and they can tow more weight than disco

What a load of ****e. The max any vehicle can tow is 3.5tonnes or 4tonnes if you have close coupled brakes and the disco is rated to tow both limits so you are full of ****e..

I am slowly coming out of my shell but don't feel that I am quite ready to express myself fully.. However I am hoping that with the support of the people on Here, that I will be able to achieve my full potential and be able to fully express myself before too long..
