G/Box needs replacing...

...I was thinking of going with sommonites but have heard mixed things on the company.

Are they any good?

If not who would you recommend?

Thanks

Personally...if you are handy with a spanner I would say refurb it yourself! At least then you can be safe in the mind of what has been changed, and with what grade of parts, etc!

How involved actually is rebuilding a gearbox for someone that's never done it before?
I'm fairly handy with the spanners but never attempted working on a gearbox and would be more than scared of it, as far as I know my box hasn't disintegrated yet but it'd be useful to know anyway!

fairly involved. deffo read the manual first, then decide.
simmonites will be expensive, other than that wouldnt know their quality or warranty.
also, concencus of opinion, is not to use beaumont landrovers at halifax. search the name on here and have a read.
unfortunately unable to recomend anywhere that will help your cause!
edit.
whats up with your box, and are you local to simmy's?

Well, it is a basic mechanical gearbox, nothing really complicated about it. If you are handy with spanners and can apply a methodical approach I cant see why not. Take it apart, look for wear, replace all the seals and replace any hardware that looks worn, re-assemble. Perhaps that is simplifying it a little!

i wolud encourage every body to try and to it themselves you can manage without any special tools on series boxes,i would be more then glad to give advice

I have neither of these things tbh
tool can be made from a 1 1/4 bsp coupling with the castlations cut into it, welded to a 8" length of steampipe, and mine has a gurt nut welded on for a socket.
will take a pic an post when i find it in the shop.
circlit pliers or a decent set of long nose pliers with the ends ground to fit the circlit.

Ah made me own....

we are on about a series box here arent we?
just rechecked op an it dont actually say!

think your on the wrong nut buster! even box, which made me wonder if i were on the right box!

use a punch works well enough it doesnt need to be torqued down just tight ,snap ring on mainshaft holding third gear split with dot punch opposite gap , but feeler gauges to set freeplay in 2nd and 3rd gear are necessary
