Replaced the suspension all round. Rear springs were cracked at the bottom and both dampeners were shot. Front dampeners weren’t great. Also got rid of the annoying 2inch lift the previous owner had put on.

Replaced with puma Standard height springs and AT terrafirma dampeners at the front and TF HD springs and AT dampeners at the back.

The difference is extraordinary. Nice ride. No roll. Even my partner commented on this.

who would have thought returning it to the standard height and replacing utterly knackered suspension would make such a difference.

l fitted Puma springs and Terrafirma adjustable dampers to my TD5 110

It made quite a difference to the ride quality and was well worth doing.

l also fitted Discovery spring isolators to the front but l am not sure these made any noticeable improvement

what do spring isolators do?

lt's basically a flat rubber ring about 1cm thick that sits between the spring and seat, so isolating the chassis from suspension noise (in theory)
They were fitted to the Discovery but not the Defender, however you can add them although to do so you have to take the spring off.

oh interesting. Wish I’d known that when I did the suspension.

l didn't notice much if any difference tbh

Although l guess every little helps. The best reduction in noise levels for next to no money, is to fit a self adhesive D-seal along the rear flange of the bonnet, (between bonnet and bulkhead)

You can fit it with the bonnet in place, but it's
much easier if you remove it.

Difference in noise levels, particularly when the vent flaps are open, is up to 10db on the meter!!

Effectively running with the bent flaps open no longer increases noise levels in the cab, until you get past about 50mph and wind noise starts to rise.
