:confused:i have 1998 disco 1.when i get to about 70mph i hear a whistle sound coming from somewhere in the engine.could the turbo be on its way out or something else.any ideas?

its only just started to make this noise,is it anything toworry about and would it drive if it went. i only ask because am going cammping with kids and have a bit of driving ahead of me. london to wales.thanks.

Since I changed the hoses mine now whistles .. only at certain revs, but there's a definite whistle.

Probably the turbo, and some of them do whistle. If it happens only when accelerating it'll be a leak somewhere between the air filter and the engine. Check hose tightness.

Mine only started to whistle after I replaced the inlet / exhaust manifold gasket. I put it down to the fact that I shagged the threads on one, maybe two of the holes, therefore it isn't sealing properly.

The whistling starts at about 2000rpm. It's kinda a whoooaa, whooOOAAAA, whoOOAAAA, WWWHHOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! sorta noise.

I'm sure that by simply typing in some random letters onto an internet forum , you all know exactly what I mean. If not, if you lots thats mental, not me.

When I have the balls to helicoil the head, then I guess I will find out if that is the cause as the WHOOOAAAA thing will stop. problem is that as seen as I tend to **** everything up on my Disco, I haven't got the funds at present to pay for the inevitable new cylinder head. Dam reccesion.

None of mine have ever whistled. I'll start worrying now (or get a hearing aid). Could be it's one of those whistles that's only audible to dogs and teenagers. ;)

Actually it might be ...

I only started hearing the whistle when I changed the pipes over, our lass says it's the same whistle she's been telling me about for years that I simply haven't heard! She gets Tinnitus so has some trouble hearing low notes and speech, but high notes give her some trouble ... ;)

I've had several tdi discos and they've all whistled to some extent. If however it's really loud I would check all the pipework for splits. Should be pretty easy to spot and will impair your performance if present. If I had no turbo noise I'd be checking hoses, air filter, intercooler and wastegate to make sure it was all doing what it should. A bit of whistling is useful as it tells you when the turbo is kicking in to boost.

I'm off to the hearing clinic on Tuesday. I wonder if they know about Landy whistles?:)
