Is it a standard vehicle of has it had an engine conversion, if so from what to what? Cant really see from the picture but could it be some sort of carbon filter for emissions purposes or a dehydrator canister for aircon (if you have it?). Where can the dangly pipes reach to - may give you a clue?

I'd guess that it is a vacuum accumulator for the brakes.

Could be right, if it has a Perk or similar, that would have been connected to the exhauster pump.
Pretty hard to tell from that pic, tbh, could be almost anything!

It's made worse identifying the component because it's in the engine bay of a Santana 2500.

It will probably only affect the brake servo, not the running
Maybe you dont have a servo or it is running off another vacuum source?

People often do do that. I have removed the bits sometimes!
Often because the vehicle has been changed in some way, like a different engine, or maybe a new vaccum pump makes the tank redundant.
If you dont need it, and your motor is working ok, just remove it and scrap it!
