white smoke

Hi All
Can anyone please tell me if white smoke on start up is normal, TDI 300, 92K, 1996.

Turn her over and let idle no problem, but if you drive off theres in my humble opinion a lot of white smoke bellowing out but only until the engine reaches normal temp and then the white smokes gone, no water loss in the expansion tank.

As the Discos under a 3 month warranty its a good oportunity to get it sorted now.

Go out and smell it, it will either be diesel vapour or water. A little white on a cold day is normal well for my 2.5N/A can't say I have ever seen much from our 300tdi.

If its water then somewhere along the way water is getting into the system, coolant leak is unlikely if there is no water loss, could be a little water in your fuel.

If its a diesel smell then on start up it could be a succession of misfiring cycles on cold, however on a 300tdi this should not happen as they usually start quite cleanly. It could be the timing needs to be advanced slightly.
