ok, so recently replaced head gasket (2002 td5 defender) but now on start up, when u drop the accelerator for a few seconds you get a small puff of white smoke and then it clears, but, when heated up i still have the same problem, should i be worried, im not loosing coolant or oil??

yep the hairline crack if there was 1 through it overheating is still there should always have pressure test done it costs about £35 it gives piece of mind, easier than stripping it all down again

Hi there, sorry to hijack - but I have a similar issue, so saves wasting a new thread...

puff of white smoke on startup, and for a few seconds after starting, on a '95 300tdi. my old 200tdi always gave the normal puff of black smoke.

does this mean I deffo have head/gasket issues, or can it be caused by something else? the EGR has already been stripped.

It sounds more like unburnt fuel in your case. The most likely cause is either a dodgy glow plug (although it shouldn't need them with a 300tdi) or possibly a leaking or worn injector.

dont suppose i could put this down to any of the following, not bothering replacing the glow plugs when the head was off, diesel thats been sitting in it for about a month, or a small bit of water in the intercooler... oops :D
