Hi All
I have a 53 plate freelander that has just started to blow out white smoke and starts hunting on start up. When warm it runs perfect can anyone please advise me what problem i am having and how to resolve it
Thanks

So it has got colder so could be glow plug related?? Check power getting to plugs, check resistance of each glow plug. The glow plug light only tells you the engine management is asking the plugs to come on, it doesn't prove they work!!!

Failing that it could be an injector leaking fuel whilst engine off and then toomich fuel in cylinder when starting.

Mine does exactly the same thing some smoke on start up and slightly lumpy soon clears and runs perfect been the same since I got it nearly 8years ago

Thank you for your reply I will start with the glow plugs if no success then investigate the injectors Thanks again

Hi all & thanks for your help.
Having just done the leak test as instructed by several of you I could not see any diesel coming from the top of the injectors, but I did notice number 1 did not have any diesel in the top of it when I removed the return But 2,3 & 4 did and there was signs of diesel around 2,3 & 4 injectors. Wold this suggest that these injectors are failing and need replacing

Having just done the leak test as instructed by several of you ..
was the test done after the engine had been run up to operating temp. ?
or on a cold engine ..
the leak-back test should be done on a warmed engine .. pref. at operating temps
if done on a cold engine the results will be in inaccurate

```````````````
if it were done when warm .. and no fuel appeared in the bottles or lines
that would suggest there is injector leak via the nozzles
i.e. into the cylinder
```````````````````````````````
check oil level to see if leaking fuel has got down to the sump
'n sniff the dipstick for a hint of diesel ..
`````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````
btw: white smoke from a diesel be 'unburnt-fuel' ..
```````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````````

{ edit } .. i don' rekon the glow plugs would activate much
.. @ current daytime ambient temps ..
{ edit 2 } another .. re: the o.p. issue ..
might be worth cleaning the fuel-rail sensor plug / socket pins

Well having now done the test at car temp I had same result, but now the car is showing signs of black & white smoke I'm thinking the injectors need replacing can you recommend a reliable supplier. Also do I need to programme and code reconditioned injectors as I have looked on ebay and a seller is stating they need coding and programming
Thanks all

Hi All
I have now replaced the injectors and the car starts fine with no hunting, but i am still seeing white smoke, i have also changed the cam breather filter and also the glow plugs. I am know at a stand still regarding the smoke does any one have any idea what could be causing it

I wouldn’t worry about it to much as I said before mine does this and always has if I hold it about 2000-2500 revs it will do it all the time if I’m stationary but normal driving it pulls like a train it tows 1500kg regularly and it doesn’t even notice it . I’ve had it seven years now ,so if it’s running ok I’d say leave well alone and just keep an eye on it

Thanks for that ll do as you say, did not have time today to do a proper road test will do that tomorrow
Thanks again
