Just got myself a very early pre production freelander 1 2.0 Lseries diesel sadly it came with running fault/poor starting.

The previous owner parked it up for 2 week while on holiday it started fine and when returning home from the airport he was in a rush a driving faster than usual. Approx. 20 mins after stating the engine light came on followed by loads of smoke (colour unknown) then the engine light went off.

Hes replaced the injectors. Fuel filter and pipes but still needed 30 sec of cranking to start and loads of white smoke on tick over and wouldn’t rev up.

During my ownership ive managed to get it to start and tick over fine but im still left with very poor reving and loads of white smoke/smell of diesel

I firstly check and tightened all the fuel pipe

Cleaned the mesh filter on the injection pump

Checked the hoes from the turbo to cooler and to the engine

Checked the pump timing

The egr has been blanked so believe that makes the maf redundant on the early L Series diesel. I have disconnected it and made no difference when running.

Ive removed the electrical connections on injector 1, boost controller both brought on the warning light.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know you say you've checked the pump timing, but I'd be going back to it. Sure that is the most likely cause.

You might like to have a compression test done though to make sure the engine is fundamentally sound first.

Check cam timing and pump timing accurately. If the pump timing is just a few degrees out, the engine won't run properly.

I checked the pump timing as per the haynes manual instruction. Basically it involved removing the top timing belt cover lining the timimg marks up then checking the timing on the pump. It did mention locking off the crank with a 6.75mm drill bit but I couldnt find where it need to be placed.
I didnt mention where and if the top part of the engine could be locked off.

Not a good book then if it doesn't tell you where to do that.

Have a look in the LR Rave Workshop Manual, you can download it onto a PC and there's info here...

The MyRangeRover links were working last week cos I checked them - they're not working today though. It does go up and down like a yoyo that site.

Unfortunately my router died a couple of weeks ago so the MyDocz ones are not currently accessible either. I need to get a router that will forward properly but to busy at the mo.

ive just this second found one thanks

I may have possibly found the problem. decided to re bleed the fuel system starting at the filter then the pump followed by the injectors and now I have smooth idling and revs up freely.
only problem im left with is after 3 quick presses of the accelerator im left with the same white some and rough running.
