Ok lads, this ones got me puzzled... just refitted a head gasket on my defender 110, td5, 2002 (eu3). http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/removing-head-110869.html <---- thats the story behind why i did it, now that its back together, she starts on the first turn, no bother, but then its white smoke in low revs, black smoke at high revs.... also seems to be a knocking at idle speed, (doesnt get louder or faster with engine revs, sounds like something hitting off a hollow object) other than that its perfectly normal.. any ideas??

injector clearances.... ok, i sent the head to be skimmed with injectors in place, the guy there charged me to remove and replace them because i had no idea how to remove/replace them, is it likely he ****ed them up? how do i check? white smoke, i think ive diagnosed as being a bit of water built up it the inter cooler while it was disconnected as it was there through the first half of the revs the first time i started it, but since then ive let it cool and restarted it, no white smoke and black seems to only be when burrying the foot... however on the test drive i just did the turbo is only reaching about 12/13 psi, it used to peak at about 19 psi... any thoughts on that?

If he was not familiar with setting up the TD5 head then he could well have fooked it up. I'll bet he just undid the rocker shaft and took the injectors out before merely bolting it all back together and assuming the clearances would still be correct. You need to take the top cover off and adjust each injector. Firstly make sure that each injector clamp is torqued to the correct setting. Loosen the injector adjuster locknut and wind the adjuster upwards as far as it will go. With the relevant injector cam lobe at full lift (turn the engine by hand) gently screw the injector adjuster down until you feel it bottom out then back it off by exactly one turn before locking the adjuster with the lock nut. Do this for each injector on a cold engine.
Some black smoke is normal when flooring the pedal to accelerate but it should ease off once you get up to speed. If you have black smoke all the time then you are over fueling for some reason.
As for the turbo pressure if you did not alter the wastegate rod then you may have a leak in the intercooler piping somewhere.

I didn't think you were supposed to skim TD5 heads? I thought Land Rover said that if the head is too far out of the specs then it needs to be replaced?

All fixed :) black smoke and lack of power caused by the intake pipe running from filter to turbo was after slipping off and was getting partially sucked into the turbo, chokeing the engine, white smoke seems to have been condensation, and waterpump, thermostat, coolant pipes an coolant gauge sender yoke are all in good nick, took her for a drive today, all's perfect, for now ;) thanks to everyone who helped out with the questions, much appreciated :)
