Hi after a catalogue of disasters with my 1997 p38 2.5 dse first fuel pump failure then overheating and had to be towed 45 miles back home replaced thermostat radiator and viscose fan overheating cured but left with screeching noise when engine revved replaced turbo and this cured that problem. Now I have a whistling noise comes on at 1750 rpm and fades away at 2500 rpm louder when cold worse when pulling hard anyone have any ideas as I am baffled  forgot to add the noise only occurs when driving forwards or backwards high or low range. When engine is revved and car stationary no noise

If the noise only occurs when driving forwards or backwards in high or low, what other directions/ ranges do you drive in ? Sideways/ neutral perhaps. Check your pipes/ clips on the turbo to intercooler and any other connections that might had been disturber when your turbo was changed:rolleyes::D:D

irrespective of the direction of driving the point is the noise only occurs when the car is being driven. Already checked turbo hoses. I can rev the engine while stationary and no sign of noise. beginning to think it may be autobox or transfer box.

Hi transfer neutral was selected before being towed. don't know weather its my imagination or not but the autobox seems late changing ie 2000 to 2300 rpm

Is it possible or sensible to stick it in neutral while driving and see if it still does it? Maybe check the fluid levels in the autobox, transfer box and diffs first?

thanks for your help chaps ,if I put the gear lever in neutral and rev the engine to 2000 to 2500 no noise, and yes I can confirm the fuse was put in number 11 fuse holder and transfer neutral came up on the dash display.

Hi all just done lock up test as described by range rover . net ie they suggest putting hand brake on holding down foot brake select drive pushing accelerator to the floor and engine rpm should not go above 2000 which mine did not suggesting auto box and torque converter ok. However whistling noise still there witch brings me back to engine as the noise appears to come from the front, considering the engine was overheated and had to be driven 500 yards with the temp guage in the red before I could stop safely could this be head gasket. no sign of oi in water or water in oil but cooling system dose seem to have a lot of pressure
