I have a 2009 freelander 2 that is making a whining noise at 30 mph and again between 45 and 50, its not diff bearings cos they were replaced last year.
Would much appreciate any ideas.
Thanks.

I wouldn't right off the new bearings being the cause. Replacement parts often fail a lot quicker than original depending on what make they are and how well they were fitted. Rear diffs on early F2s were made of cheese, often it takes a whole replacement unit to resolve issues. I wouldn't mind betting most F2s built up to 2010 have had their diff replaced.

If the bearings went and they were changed like for like, there's a good chance they have failed again - especially if the Haldex unit hasn't been serviced and is giving the diff a hard time.

Just seems odd to me the whine is there at 30, then starts again between 45 & 50.That’s coincidental with gear changes.
Try and narrow the problem down by changing manually (gear lever to the left and click it forward and back to change gear). See if the noise only exists in one or more gears, or on the change.

Thanks Rank Amateur I'll give that a try, can't try it for a couple of days though cos it's in the body shop having some paintwork done but thanks again will let you know how it goes.

Hi Rank Amateur, tried running car in manual as you suggested noise comes in at the same speeds as when in auto no matter what gear, looks like I'll just have to turn the radio up, took it to a local garage and the guy took it out, he said he could hear the noise but didn't know what it was.
