Just bought a 2002 TD4. There a permanent whining noise coming fro the rear drivers side, guy said it was the fuel pump which is normal...not sure about that....anyone help?

Is the noise only present when the ignition is turned on? If so it is more than likely the fuel pump you're hearing.

Another thing you can try is leaving the ignition on for a few minutes (engine off) to let the fuel get up to pressure - If the noise then stops, it's the pump you are indeed hearing.

Noise starts when ignition is turned on and continues all the time

Could be the pump is showing signs of being internally worn, hence the excess noise and why it does not stop as it is just not capable of getting up to maximum fuel pressure.

However, do bear in mind the noise from these low pressure fuel pumps do make quite a noticeable noise even when in 100% working order - so it could be perfectly normal. Difficult to judge really without hearing it in person.

Perhaps just take it with a pinch of salt, keep your ears open to see if the noise gets any louder, and more importantly if the engine starts to show any symptoms of a failing pump.

After the ignition has been turned on for about a minute the noise stops, but one the engine is started the noise starts again and does not stop while engine is running
