Looking for a bit of advice on a whining grinding noise!

reasonably new to Landy's and it's been a while since i've had to get a socket set out

I have a 2000'plate 110 double cab that I new needing a few bit's and bob's done but hopefully nothing major!!!

I've had to do a few minor things but recently it's started making a bit of a whining noise when under a bit of acceleration and also gives a bit of a clunk like worn engine mountings I experienced with older cars a few years ago! Anyway the noise has now progressed and is making a fair old whining grinding noise when deccelrating!

Any advice would be much appreciated with an idiots guide to solving it ;)

If the clunk is heard upon releasing the clutch to change gear, it's likely to be either the rear A-frame ball joint, worn drive shaft UJs, or slack in your drivetrain emanating from somewhere else - differentials, half shafts or drive flang

Thanks for that!

The clunk does happen when the clutch is released, what's the easiest way to check and narrow it down for a novice?

Well, the first thing I would check would be the UJs. Get underneath it (with the handbrake on), and give the propshafts good shake and try to twist them, and check for any play in the joints at either end. If there is any slack in them at all, they need replacing. Then, with the handbrake off and the wheels securely chocked, get under it again and try to turn the propshafts again - this time, if the whole shaft turns; then there's your slack! A small amount is OK, but any more than a couple of centimeters of play and something should be done ideally. This play either comes from the gearbox end (output shaft) or the axle end - worn differentials (expensive) worn halfshafts or worn drive flanges (cheap).

If this is all OK, then you can suspect your rear a-frame ball joint will need to be replaced.

Let us know how you get on :)

Thanks Langers,

I'll try and give it a go tomorrow :)

Had a look today to try and narrow down the fault!
Tried with handbrake on and no play whatsoever on the prop and UJ's seemed ok.
Tried with handbrake off and got masses of play
where propshaft goes into box just below cubby box access panel, that large drum part  got about 2"-3" of play! also when moving it can feel a sort of grinding from within the drum. Is this an easy fix or is this a garage job?
