hey there m8, i'v just bought my self a 90, had upto 8G to fork out and had ur dilemma. In my opinion, it would seem that you will b able to get a better tdi (300tdi ofcourse), than if you stretched to find a td5 for that kinda money. They are out there, but dependant on what ur looking for, hardtop, station wagon etc) will affect wat you can buy for that kinda money. wat i personally went for was a 1997 300tdi 90 hardtop, with about 120k on th clock, stuck windows in th bk and had a respray for £7500. two pieces of advice to start with, go for condition over mileage, and its all about the chassis/bulkheads. rust is a bit#h and needs to be avoided. Mines a bit ratty on th inside, and second gr's syncromesh is bit warn meaning I have to jus be gentler puttin it in gear, but its chassis is fantastic (considerin its 10 yrs old), no patches, no rot and the engine is in good nick, plus the body work is pretty straight alway round.

so go for a 300tdi and ur find a real good one for ur kinda money.

Plus wen it comes to servicing/repairs its cheaper and easier than doin a td5-less electrics.

hope it makes sence and helps a smudge.

Don't worry about body style buy the best tdi you can get for ya money. If it isn't the body style you want just buy the body you want off fleabay or a breakers.

For 8k you'll be looking at P to S reg prices are falling really fast at the moment. Problem is someone forgot to tell the landyowners selling privately but their slowly waking up to it.
