3.5 blocks are the best as they don't suffer from the heat/age related liner issues, but they do suffer from lack of ability to produce much power!

Top hat 4.6 is the way to go but this will cost you money.

There is no easy solution with rover v8, but it pays dividends to keep it cool.

Ideally source a proper low mileage unit and work very hard on keeping the engine sub 85 degrees and watch her for lean running and you might get away with it.

3.5 is the only fit and forget standard block, but all rv8 suffer plenty of other age/use related issues also.
 
Actually that's a lie, 4.4 p76 engine from Australia is the way to go for rover v8 in a land rover or heavy car, but that will also cost you money, same as top hat 4.6 in the end probably.
 
Well yeah but I thought we were talking RV8.

After spending some time in a Monaro these past few days with the LS1 fitted, I have now lost faith in RV8 and would never pile any serious money into one.

also what would an ls1 do in mud and water noisy? and how would you get a driveline to work?
 
No idea pal, but it's coil near plug so igntion would be sorted, they're all waterproof as much as any other engine, no idea about driveline but all the proper comp trucks are built for Chevy or jaguar/land rover v8, everyone has given up with the rover to be fair, versus crate Chevy at 500 bhp out of the box.

well it was designed in ww2 so its done ok. I think that if you talk about real hot rodders , ie not all shiney and costing $$$$$$$$$$$$$ but not rad rods which are designed to look terrible the uk equivilent is landy folk- not those with disco threes etc but 300 tdi and rv8 men who go and play on some lanes or use them for work when they could with much less cash and effort use a reliable jap 4x4 but they choose not to.

Tbh they dont generally have 5k for a crate motor from jegs and they dont have another 5k/time and facilities to make it fit and upgrade the entire driveline to 24 spline salisburys etc so it wont break every time you boot it. much like the real hot rodders we are making it work in the real world with a relistic budget with uk available parts (p76 and megasquirt aside :p ) and that normally comes down to the rebuild style marks done and you originally had. for that I dont think the rv8 is quite given up on yet mate.

what you need noisy is a modern v8 for hacking about on the street which is what I have my 32 valve quad cam v8 bmw for :D
 
I've often thought about the Lexus V8, makes nice power and is as reliable as the day is long and is very well proven.

You can buy a complete LS400 for not much cash now, its newer, reliable, readily available and could work out pretty cheap.

John, I never said that everyone has given up on the rover as far as the everyday man, just that it has reached a point where it is not worth the money it takes to tune it, when you can buy a crate engine for similar and have more power still.

The rover in mine and pretty much everyone else's car in this forum for a great job and is very reliable, I think we've just got to be grown up about this and say that is you're looking for 300bhp plus, you should really look elsewhere!
 
I agree with that noisy,dont think the blokes asked it though-just wanted to know which was more reliable/better didnt he?

re the lexus too many wires for me and most, ok for fanny though as hes a greeny :p
 
I know and I did reply to the OP as best I could, just that I decided to add a bit extra info also.

I always thought that iron block Chevy was very heavy but griffman says it weighs same as 300tdi?!
 
well diesels are quite heavy. they both weigh a lot more than a rv8 though tbh.

223 kg fully dressed for the rv8 I believe? its funny as I am sure you know when lifting it about the crank is heavier than the block even on my 4.5 lol
 
LS1 is not as light as a RV8 and its not a simple job to fit. having a lot of power in a defender is not the best idea in the world though lol
