the 2nd one offers you recovery points

I have a steering guard, very similar to that one, fitted .. to be honest it's worked well for me. It's bent .. Manby show '08, I'm certain that without it I wouldn't have driven home.

I've never tried steering tubes but they look a good idea, and re-location of the damper would be 'a good thing' .. my damper has a couple of dents in it!

Negatives for the guard is that it will bottom out earlier and in one case my guard got hooked up and I needed recovery. From mud/ruts, not enough grip from AT's to drag the guard over a rock in the centre ... Yorkshire Dales '07 ish.

On balance if I had another Disco and wanted to do it up again I'd probably have steering tubes as I've never tried them and would like to do so ..

I Have forged Jate Rings so recovery wasnt really an Issue, i was thinking more of which offers better protection in terms of minimising damage whilst maintaining manoverability

What about fitting an entire Fiat Punto to the front?
