Looking at selling my land rove discovery 300 tdi and swap it for a defender but not sure on which on the get 200tdi 300tdi or the td5

Which is best? Value for money and reliability?

A defender is a defender is a defender really. Only difference between the 200tdi and the others is the gearbox. As for the engines do a search, its been covered a multitude of different times. There's also a lengthy thread on what the best engine is

Well I'm biased cos I've got one but I would say a 200tdi defender 110. I've got a 90 and whilst I love it I could always do with extra load space. Also you've got carrying capacity and passenger seats in the 110 too

For what it's worth, my vote goes to the 300tdi in a Defender 90, but I am also heavily biased.

Have a look at the thread that Chris posted, its got a lot of good info and might help you make your mind up. Personally I like to try and avoid electrics as much as possible so not keen on the td5, then again I've never driven one and I've heard people say they're great engines

TD5! its almost modern. The electrics arent that bad, nothing like a rangie for example. Dead reliable and as tuneable as a tuney thing if that what you want. Hunt out one with ABS if the budget will go that far. 3 tons on a trailer and no ABS on a wet road give that warm feeling of adrenaline trickling down ones inside leg, and handy off road\greenlane etc

If you got a feather in your arse, can get 225-240 HP out of them

Well in my experience I've owned various 200 & 300 TDI's - My last Defender was a TD5 which I disliked enormously and some more, nothing I liked about it. My current Defender is a 300TDI which is a sound engine and a lovely drive, although fuel consumption is a tad excessive, that said my favorite any of the 200TDI's. It's just a solid reliable engine which is home mechanic friendly. :)

not a lot of difference between 200 or 300 ,what was wrong with td5

James I forever had problems with it cutting out and given that the TD5 was supposedly a refined enging I was amazed at how load it was. Repeatedly had replace the glow plugs, nothing bug just lots of minor irritants. Have to be honest despite having a 300 now my favourite is the 200, I found fuel consumption in the 300 is a lot more!!

Oh and as you see from my many posts I am ineptness with electrics!!! :D

a bad one then , i like the td5 the best as driving goes but 300 is my favourite in that its so simple to rebuild ,you can rebore one as many times as you like just add a liner and start again
