I have a 1990, 200 tdi Defender. Original. thought I would give it a treat and change the glow plugs. It starts on the button as always. Even when left standing for a couple of weeks in below zero temperatures, but I have notice if I don't let it tick over for a few seconds when I give it some gas I can feel one cylinder misses till it warms up. I know the plugs are more then ten years old as I never changed them, I wouldn't be surprised if they are the original. I have looked at Paddocks but I am confused. There seem to be so many OEM Glow plugs. See the link. http://www.paddockspares.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=Etc+8847+200tdi+glow+plugs
Am I right in thinking the Delphi ones are the correct original.

Or can someone advise me differently. I prefer to get some good ones and do the job properly, then forget about it for another 10 to 20 years or so. I don't want to take a chance with the ones that come in a blue box as sometimes they are OK and sometimes they only last a short time.

Hi Mike,

Stupid question, but have you checked to see if it is the glow plug and not the circuit up to it.
Also, be careful , if they have been in there that long without moving then they might be a little tight and feeling delicate.....:p

Good luck.

Cheers

Haven't checked anything yet. It is due a oil change and grease up so I thought I would order all the parts and do it all whilst my hands were dirty. I recently had to change the glow plugs on our Toyota Auris. They had been in there for 225000 Kilometers.I was worried if they would come out alright. I could just leave them but then again Murphy's law , it would probably let me down when I need it most. I have to say the Defender has been a fantastic starter.

I'd leave well alone. the TDi doesn't really need glowplugs to start until the temperature is well into the minus figures and they don't affect running once it's started. More likely you have a slight injector fault or air leak in the fuel system beyond the injection pump.

My Defender has recently spent two weeks in the open standing idle in -18C . Started on the first turn of the engine. I know what you mean, sometimes its best to leave things well alone which is why I'm hesitating. But I like to know everything is spot on.

As it's starting ok at that temp leave alone. It is very easy to leave the tip of a plug in the head even if the body unscrews. Then it's head off to remove the remains.

Ive always used the cheap and cheerful ones from ebay (12 quid from memory), been fine for 6/7 yrs so far.

Beru are OEM.

Misfire on first starting is more likely to be fuel - possibly leak-off lines letting a little air in overnight which takes a few seconds to clear through when starting in the morning.

It starts on the button and ticks over OK, If I immediately floor the accelerator when stone cold then it seems to miss on one cylinder for a few seconds then picks up and runs fine. It feels to me more like a glow plug failure. Once the engine has picked up it runs fine. If when I start it and let it tick over for just a few seconds its fine, you wouldn't notice anything.

I'm with zeaphod - not heater plugs. After a top end overhaul on my 200, I never once used the heater plugs to start it - including two very cold winters. No odd misfires either.

Sounds as if there is nothing wrong with it. Why would you need to floor it when stone cold, let it warm up and then go for it.

Well, I have changed the glow plugs this morning . My fear was they might well and truly be stuck there as I'm not sure they have ever been changed. I know they haven't been changed in the last seven years since I have owned it.
Pleased to report they came out and went in a treat. No problems at all. And no miss fire when revved up when cold. Not that I intend on doing it often. Now I know I shouldn't have a problem for the next seven years or so. As that went well, I think I will now check all the oil levels in the diffs and transfer box etc.
