Hello, I'm trying to find an engine that will go in my series 2 landy. The gearbox i have is actually out of a 2a and the engine i removed was the 2.25 petrol. i also have the choice of using either 2a axles or the series 2 axles, if there any differant?? which engines will fit? im really looking for a diesel engine if i can find one. There is one advertised locally but its a 2.5td from an early model defender, will that fit straight in? Ive also heard you can use some perkins engines and daihatsu engines etc??? As you can probably tell im a bit of a novice so if you could reply in language i can understand it would be great :D Many Thanks

Hmmm, as Slob once said: you can make anything fit if you try hard enough. Personally, I wouldn't go for a Perkins because it would make your car something other than a Land Rover.
Heidi has a 200TDi under her bonnet. She still has her original series gearbox and we didn't have to alter the front grille panel either. One engine mounting had to be moved on the chassis, along with quite a few little bits and bobs that you don't think of until something doesn't quite go. We fitted a new transfer box as well, so we can now overtake things

Try it, you'll love it - it's a way of life (sorry - but I'm listening to "Joe's Garage" while typing this )

how do all,
just over 1 week since fitting a 2.8td daihatsu into my s1 88, goes like stink. could do with the brakes doing.
whilst the purist's will shun you for fitting a non english lump, if it suits your needs then throw it in.
(2.5 daihatsu eng+box in my 80, transit in the womans 90?)

a lot of these 3rd party engines are useless in the landy. the maximum power is in a completely wrong part of the rev range.
you need max power in the 2-3000 rpm range.
hence the tranny and perkins are pretty useless.
