After bending the corner of my standard bumper a fair bit at Yarwell a little while ago, I wanted to get something a little bit more robust. The need for a winch is not important. I just need something tough and tough looking as a replacement. But I dont want it to break the bank - they're pretty expensive. And as most second hand ones are miles away and cant be shipped due to the weight, does anyone have some suggestions?

If you make the bumper too strong then you are likely to bend the frame if you hit something. If it must be stronger then why not weld some plate on the ends.
Just a thought.

My old Series IIa had a piece of railway track for a front bumper. No way it was going to bend and it took two peeps to lift it into place. Never did manage to drill a hole for the starting handle though.

No idea what the chassis or dumb irons would have done in an accident but it was great for parking ;) and a talking point down the pub. Eventually weighed it in down the scrappy and fitted a standard bumper as it kept going rusty.

If you are feeling flush then Devon make some very nice HD dumpers...many other companies do also ranging from Britpart and Terrafirma through to Equipe depending on budget.

If you join the Tixover Playdays group on facebook, one of the members on there was advertising HD homemade bumpers. Guardian Off Road in Peterborough/Lincs area make some nice stuff at good prices. There is also a bloke at the LRO show every year who makes/sells bumpers off a big trailer, lots of different designs and winch/no winch options for under £100.
