My wife has got me a day at Landrover experience for a present.Ive never done any off roading as I only got my old tdi to pull our caravan.Ive got a choice of Discovery 3 ,Range rover , Defender and last but by no means least Hippo. As a novice what would you recomend I should go for.I live in Manchester area so nearest one is near Chester. There is also one in Snowdonia area.Anyone been to these places ,which ones best?

If you want to pick up anything that will be useful in a Tdi, go for the Defender, that's the only one with the similar controls.
Ignore the comments about the Freelanders, they're even more impressive in the wet than in the dry. You just need to watch out for rocks & ruts.

Agree - the defender will teach you how to drive properly. The disco will blind you with the wonders of technology that does it all for you but which, in your case, you ain't got. Fantastic half-day out btw. Recommend. LR gave me one free. I don't know why but I wasn't going to quibble.

I went on one of those in perth and took the defender, it were fookin great! And even the instructor said the hippo's were not that great and that there were different tracks for them to go round.
He rated the disco as the best all rounder, the range rover too expensive and the defender as the most capable regardless of weather, track conditions or anythin else. We did nearly rip off the towbar on the departure angle bit :)

In my three years as a (largely happy) hippo owner, I did have the misfortune to have to do a rescue on Dartmoor. Oh the damage! Dents in both sills and a new "engine protector" floor pan. Insurance paid for it though. They are nice little cars but no good for rough terrain. And with HDC and no bottom box, you have the facility to go DOWN slopes that you can't get back up again!

It's Defender for off-road fun, Disco for all-round Landy niceness.:)
