Which 3 legged puller....

Anyone got any experience with the various 3 legged puller sets on ebay at the moment for example:

3, 4 & 6 Inch 3 Piece 3 Leg Hub Bearing Gear Puller Set | eBay

I want to replace the front hub/bearing on my D2 - I think I need a 6" one - but are these ones up to the job?

Cheers
you dont need any pullers to do d2 wheel bearings ,just remove caliper ,disc, unplug sensor under bonnet, undo shaft nut ,undo 4 bolts securing hub
shaft can be knocked through with copper hammer and hub knocked off similar

hes only using puller to remove hub no different than tapping hub off except your not putting pressure through shaft, you dont need new seals unless leaking

urbanpanzer strongly suggests using a 1-1/4" socket instead of a metric 32mm one

_and_ that it be a hex rather than bi-hex

I only have bi-hex metric sockets near that size - do you think this is going to be a problem?

You are brilliant James Martin. This is the next job I am off to work on. Thanks a million . Just saved me a few bob. Can I ask why a copper hammer? Could you use an acryic hammer?

why thank you :)more of a shock ,though acrylic may well do, or a soft metal punch or pad to protect threads

Where pullers are concerned, it's worth getting a more expensive one. For most of the Land Rover stuff you'll want to get apart you might find the cheap ones a bit soft and bendy when any real force is needed. These days I tend to favour the ones that have hydraulic mechanisms as they can exert a lot of pressure fairly easily. My current one is a bit like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Hydraulic...110691?hash=item3f50b702a3:g:2-UAAOSwd0BVr619 and it's succeeded in getting bearings off shafts and separating various interference-fit items.

We have one of the larger sets on ebay, and to change the hub on Philip's D2 we had that wound up very hard and thrashed the hub and shaft to within an inch of their life before the shaft came out.

Puller set similar to this one:

If the splines have fretting rust, it can be a big job to get the shaft out of the hub. Philip's was tight all the way. The one the other side just pulled out :)

Put some Copaslip on the splines when you reassemble.

I have a rear o/s wheel bearing going on mine, but I have spare shafts already built up with good bearings, ready to go in.

+1 for the hydraulic puller - its effectively a force multiplier, and little can resist their "pull" :D:D:D :)rolleyes:)

Well that is my disco back after getting the hub fixed . The car drives so much smoother. I was looking to do the other side by myself however the mechanic says the other side is not an issue. Just a thank you to everyone who has contributed to this post.
