Hey guys,

Just want some thoughts and ideas on where to rebuild my disco. It will be an extensive rebuild!

Obviously a standard garage is out of the question, I can't afford one of those 'rent a mechanics garage' things because it will probably take me a good few months to finish, and now I am in a new place I have no drive, no garage and no room to fix it up! Can't bear to let her go though. Family won't have a dirty disco hanging around on their drives either and all my friends (live on the outskirts of London) Don't have driveways either!

What cheap options have others used? Or does anybody know of any cheap garages to rent that would be suitable?

£200 a month in Epsom for a spot on somebody's drive:jaw:

I think I'd park in front of their house for free

There's also a difference between renting a garage to park and one to start a full rebuild

I'd say your best chance is have a walk round an industrial estate , one of the small ones and have a chat with some of the owners to see if one of them will rent you a corner

As long as you can get access when you want

Hey Paddocks isn't a bad idea, no gargantuan postage costs for parts! Think my road is out of the question for a rebuild, it is barely big enough to park a car on each kerbside yet double deckers still plough down it like a its a drag strip! Benefits of living in London eh!

I did do a search for garages and parking but don't think I have tried most of the sites you suggest I will have another look thanks for that :)

I am not really to bothered about travelling a reasonable distance to work on it at weekends and such, I will just have to keep my eyes out and hope it doesn't get me in trouble where it is currently parked! Seems a shame to sell it when most of the damage is bodywork rust

I was contemplating buying a used shipping container, then finding somewhere to put it, was gonna try farmers. Good thing about the container is it can be locked up reasonably securely. Thinking of using a gennie for lights and tools. Only thing is not sure you have the room to move round the sides for an extensive re - build.

Sorry I cant add any thing to this thread ,
But that engine swop vid link was a good watch,
Im off to watch some more of there stuff :D

It's shocking how much space you need, my barn could hold 6 cars if parked close together, but just stripping the Landy and having somewhere to put all the bits, plus benches, tools, log burner, racks for logs etc, all there is room for now is the Lotus. I would go try local farmers as they can be sympathetic to your cause. I bought a Chevy Day Van in June that still has not made it into the barn yet, or dug a pit in the barn in 3 years I've had it, if you do get a nice roomy barn/ workshop etc, be careful, as you will soon fill it up with dusty crap :)

By the time you get the Disco into the container you wouldn't be able to open the doors, so the doors would have to come off before it went into the container (container is 7ft 8ins wide internally),

The other aspect is the condensation inside a container, there will be a lot and you'll probably create more rust than you remove. I've a mate that's an importer and currently has around forty 40ft containers somewhere on the Isle of Sheppey (I've never been there), I can ask, but I really wouldn't recommend working in a container.

Well, one alternative is to use the container as a tool shed and put up a tent around the car when it rains. You might even be able to attach an awning to the (downwind) side of the container to keep the weather at bay.

Hmmm could you not install a couple of vents to prevent condensation? Or could you get the insulated ones used for shipping fresh produce? Just a thought:confused:

If you own the container it wouldn't be a problem but putting vents in a 'one trip' container (worth £2k) would write the container off for future use. The refrigerated/insulated ones would cost you around £3k or more. That said you can pick up a well used 40 footer for around £1k, line it yourself and put ventilation holes into it (assuming you have somewhere to put it).

Yeah I was thinking the same, okay maybe for a series project a container would be great for storage, until as you say, the condensation kicks in!

I like the idea of a barn, I know a few farmers as I regularly shoot just outside London, don't want to be travelling too far but it is probably my best option.

And yes, took the plenum chamber off the Disco last year to fix a few issues... you would have thought I had taken apart a Rolls Royce turbine! And being the OCD nerd, all the bolts and bits where bagged up... which migrated into the kitchen eventually along with half the interior! Ooops ;)
