Now then

I am struggling as a place to fit a second wheel on my 90 300tdi for my upcoming trip

I have one on a swing away wheel carrier on the back and don't really want to put it on the roof if I can help it

I am thinking about mounting on the bonnet but I am struggling to find a mount kit, been keeping my eye on ebay for a bout a month but nothing coming up. Also I have heard that it might crack a 300tdi bonnet as its not really designed for it. I could mod it with some steel tubing on the inside for a bit of strength??

anyone got any idea's or links to where I can get a kit from

AJ, Just buy a new bonnet with the kit installed. Far easier. That way you know its strong enough, fitted right and then when you come home, you can switch it back to the original. You dont need 2 spares to go to Tesco do you? ;) Its only 6 bolts on the hinges and undoing the bonnet stay, thats it.

Bonnets with wheel kits crop up more often than kits on their own.

Have you thought about just taking a spare tyre and not the extra rim? You could put the carcuss on the roof then without the extra 15kg of a steel wheel. Any tyre place in Africa will be able to switch it for you. Its highly unlikely that you will shred 2 sidewalls at the same time.

Food for thought.

Hello G

Yes I am thinking of that mate, I need to put tubes in all 5 anyway so I will have a go at changing them myself in the Bush (or in my garden with a cold drink to hand) using just the tools that I am taking. If I can swap them all ok I migh just go down the fix the spare on route option

why are you tubing them all? Are they tubed tyres? If not avoid using tubes except as an emergency puncture repair. They deflate faster than a tyre does and the chances are they will rub through on the rims too.

I thought if you were constantly inflating and deflating your tyres in sandy conditions etc you were better off with tubes as there is less chance of it popping of the bead

Damm this landy lark is confusing

What Ratty says is right, dont put tubes into tubless tyres Iv been through it and after 3 or 4 puntures per week for 5 weeks I learned the hard way.

AJ if thats the only reason you wanted tubes then i wouldnt bother.

You can still deflate a fair way without it popping off. you just have to drive accordingly. Not to fast, no fast cornering etc etc. The slightest pressure loss makes a huge difference. You be surprised how little you will actually deflate/inflate anyway (its quite time consuming!)
