Where to get an alternator from ?

Hi guys

Anyone know if motor factors would generally stock an alternator for a 2.5na ? Or is it a land rover/ specialist supplier part only ?

Nothing special about a LR alternator.
If they don't hold it on the shelf then they can usually get them in the same day, give them a ring and check cost & make.

Defender alternators are usually 65amp - get a disco 1 they are 100amp

Any makes to buy or to avoid ?

These are the same across the models up until the late 300tdi onwards when the belt changed to the flat serpentine type and then the TD5 had the vacuum pump on the back.
So the one you need is the early type as fitted to 200tdi, V8 and 2.5's

Just bought a Bearmach 100A for the disco...£95 from Craddocks...halfords wanted 320...go figure.

Not wanting to hi-jack the thread but just found this out, why didn't I think of it first duh.

Had a new alternator shipped out to me in france by paddocks (good price for a lucas 65amp)

Bummer I ordered the wrong hand the adjuster lug was on the top not bottom, hated the thought of the costs involved in sending it back so started trawling the net and found some advice from an alternator servicing firm.

Just undo the 3 body bolts and rotate the head to the next position,( nothing falls out or flies across the garage) and the jobs a good-un. Works too. Sigh of relief.
