My 300tdi is developing a lot of crankcase pressure. I looked in past a independant LR specialist this morning. They reckoned some of my Discos power loss will be due to head gasket failure.

They were looking for around £300 plus parts.

I'm keen to have a bash at this myself. Where is the best place to buy a head gasket kit and bolts from?

My Haynes manual has very little info on the head removal and replacement. Is there a good online manual for this?

Thanks in advance, Peter

Head gasket - HAS to be OE from land rover as the after markets ones CAN be dodgy

laminated metal one not fibre material

bolts - any where fleabay motor factors main dealer

have a search on here - LOADS of threads some I started

I dont have a Land Rover agent near me to get an OE gasket, do you mind me asking where I could find an OE one online?

no offence but ive done hundreds of head gaskets and never used a direct from dealer gasket, i usually use a trusted local factors and have never had any bother as long as they are oem and a decent brand you are laughing, if the gaskets suspect i would give the head a skim 30 quid well spent imo

thats what I said OE from land rover NOT necessarily from LR dealer
we agree not to use after market stuff

LVB500220 | Cylinder Head Gasket - New Style

HEAD GASKET 1.59mm 3 HOLE 200/300 TDI MULTI SHIM TYPE - LVB500220 - Land Rover Parts & Range Rover Parts

go for cheaper crap if you want, but price difference is not bank breaking

pays your money takes your choice -

two questions
how long you keeping the disco?
how many times do you want to do gasket?

I also agree that a skim won't be wasted money

Elring gasket and bolts is OE.

Turner engineering sold me the last gasket and bolt set I needed - I'd never seen bolts comes individually wrapped and with polystyrene seperators!

I found out why the engine ran so poorly. The twerp that had previously replaced the head gasket, stuck it down with silicon sealer.

The machine shop confirmed the cylinder head didn't need skimming. So I ordered a new gasket and bolt set. I spent today bolting it all back together.

One turn of the key to build up some oil pressure and bleed the fuel system. On the second turn it started effortlessly. It now runs much more quietly and more smoothly.

I had an extra large helping of bread and butter pudding for supper to celebrate!

Thanks for your help and tips on this one.

haha silicone sealer aint much use for cylinder pressure, you sometimes wonder how folk could manage to get as far into a job like that when they are clearly stupid lol
